Item An Examination of The Role of External Communication of Governance Audits in Organizational Ethical Performance: A Case of Select NGO’s in Nairobi, Kenya(Daystar University, School of Communication, 2023) Otundo, JamesThis study delved into the pivotal role played by external communication of governance audits in shaping the ethical performance of NGOs in Kenya. Grounded in institutional and two-step flow theories, the research investigated the influence of communication channels, governance audit parameters, stakeholder communication, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) investing on the ethical performance of NGOs in Kenya, employing a mixed-methods survey research approach. The study population consisted of 65 respondents, purposefully sampled from World Hope International Kenya and Vapor Ministries International, representing the entire internal population. Through comprehensive survey analysis, 60 completed questionnaires were utilized 10 External stakeholders and 2 focus groups of 5 people each based in Nairobi, Kenya were surveyed. The reliability and validity of tools was ascertained over a Split-half method with questions given to the pilot group for testing where the research instruments were rigorously tested for reliability and validity, with a high consistency rate of 82.50% (Cronbach's alpha = 0.83) established after a pilot study done in Tunedem foundation. The findings underscored the significance of communication channels, governance parameters, stakeholder engagement, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investment in enhancing ethical performance within NGOs. Effective communication channels were identified as positive influencers, emphasizing the vital role of transparent information dissemination. Well-defined governance parameters emerged as a crucial factor, highlighting the need for transparent and accountable organizational structures. Furthermore, meaningful engagement with stakeholders was found to be essential, emphasizing the importance of open dialogues. The study also highlighted the substantial impact of CSR investments on ethical performance, showcasing the value of socially responsible initiatives. In light of these findings, the study recommended the establishment of robust governance structures within NGOs and the development of comprehensive communication plans to ensure integrity in reporting, thereby enhancing overall ethical performance. Additionally, avenues for further research are suggested, exploring the intricate dynamics of internal communication in governance audits and extending similar studies to different organizational contexts. This research significantly contributes to the field of development communication by confirming the influence of external communication and governance audits on ethical performance in NGOs. It suggests the expansion of this concept into comprehensive studies within the realm of development communication, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between communication strategies, governance frameworks, and ethical practices in diverse organizational settings.
