Item Efficacy of Cognitive-Behavioral Coping-Skills Therapy on Alcohol and Cannabis Users among Kenyan University Students(African Journal of Clinical Psychology, 2018) Ndegwa, StephenThe rise in drug use and abuse among university students in Kenya and the resultant adverse effects have led to a simultaneous increase in the number of students in need of professional help. This study set out to evaluate the cognitive-behavioral coping skills therapy (CBST) as a treatment intervention. The study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of CBST among students using drugs and their academic achievements. A quasi-experimental design was employed on a sample of 78 respondents from Daystar University, Athi River campus. Respondent-driven sampling technique was used to select the sample. The respondents were assessed using various psychological tools and only those who met the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening and Test (ASSIST) criteria of moderate and high risk in their alcohol and cannabis use were included in the study. CBST was applied on the respondents and two post assessments were done after the intervention. The data was analyzed using inferential statistics that included t-tests, ANOVA, chi square, linear and logistic regressions. Treating university students who used drugs with CBST resulted in observable change in behavior, which indicated that CBST was effective.Item Perceived Fathers’ Parenting Behaviours and Adolescent Children’s Academic Performance In Kenya Primary Schools(International Journal of Advanced Research, 2016-11) Githinji, Scolastica Kariuki; Kuria, Stanley GithinjiThe study explored the correlation of children’s perceptions of their fathers’ parenting behaviors and the pupils’ academic performance in Kenya. Survey method involving self report measures was used to gather data on perceptions of fathers’ support, monitoring, availability and involvement in school activities while official academic records provided mean scores for English, maths, and science. The research was guided by Urie Bronfenbrennerecological theory and Baumrind (1968) parenting model. The respondents comprised of class 7 pupils selected by simple random sampling-of one district, 5 schoolswere were selectedand class in each stream, which led to 166 female and 198 male pupils in the study.Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficient techniques were used to analyze data. Findings revealed that fathers’ high monitoring, availability and provision of basic needs are linked to pupils’ higher academic performance at p< .001. However, fathers’ involvement in school activities was not linked to their children’s academic performance at p< .001. This research has both theoretical and practical implication; Parents and teachers can gain insight as to how fathers’ behaviors relate with the academic outcome of children. The findingsaddedusefulknowledge towards enhancing fathers’ child care activities and improving academic performance. The findings can be used to train fathers on involvement in raising their children and to enhance family-school ecological environment for children’s’ learning.
