Item Parenting Patterns That Influence the Behaviour in Children – An Analysis of Children Attending Sunday School in Nairobi Pentecostal Church, Valley Road, Kenya(Daystar University, School of Applied Human Sciences, 2010-05) Awiti, Flora A.This research study explored the parenting styles present among the parents of Sunday school-going children between the ages of 6 -10 years and sought to find out the influence of these styles on the behavior of the children. The study in particular sought to determine which parenting styles were used in NPC and to establish if these styles caused lack of emotional warmth, feeling of rejection or over- involvement in the children of the parents in this study. Two questionnaires were administered by the researcher, namely Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran (EMBU), which was administered to the children (age 6- 10) and Parent Stress Index (PSI) which was administered to the parents. The researcher also carried out a focus group discussion which comprised some of the parents of Sunday school going children in NPC. The results from this study indicated that the most prominent parenting style was the authoritative style of parenting (95%), which most parents in NPC used to raise their children. The remaining 5% of the parents were authoritarian, over involved and rejected their children. This study recommended some programs and activities which could inform parents about the most effective parenting styles used to raise children. One of these programs includes the church having parenting classes which parents could attend where they can be taught about the different styles of parenting and their varying effects on the behavior of a child.
