Item Diffusion of the Electrification Program in Informal Settlements in Kenya: A Study on The Adoption of The Electrification Project in Mathare Informal Settlement, Nairobi County.(Daystar University, School of Applied Human Sciences, 2016-05) Anisah, Nyambura YvonneInformal settlements in many cities are no longer just marginalized neighborhoods housing a relatively small proportion of the urban population; they instead are home to significantly large proportions of the urban population, particularly in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. These areas are therefore characterized by inadequate access to conveniences such as electricity. This study therefore sought to investigate the diffusion of the electrification program in informal settlements in Kenya and especially study the adoption of the electrification project in Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi County in Kenya. This study therefore aimed to find out how the diffusion of the electrification project in Mathare informal settlement contributed to the adoption of the electrification project. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the diffusion of the electrification technology has influenced the adoption or rejection of the electrification project in Mathare informal settlement. The target population of the study was 400 households in Mathare. From the households, the study sampled 120 residents. Data was collected using questionnaires, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented using frequency tables and pie graphs. The study revealed that there were challenges faced such as vandalism of electricity equipment used in the electrification project and violent attacks from the cartels on the residents who were willing to be connected with the electricity from then electrification project. The study recommends that Kenya Power should improve relations with the residents of Mathare informal settlement using CSR projects of their choice. The company should also establish community representatives to address and report any concerns of electricity defaults.
