T The purpose of this study was to determine how Twitter was used during the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Fire outbreak on August 7, 2013, by examining tweets that were posted using the hashtag #JKIAFire, analyzing the data using mixed methods research (MMR), and examining the social mediated crisis communication model (SMCCM) and discourse of renewal (DoR) in the application of social media crisis communication. The researcher sought to determine the significance of using Twitter in communicating about the 2013 JKIA Fire, how Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Airways (KQ) used Twitter to communicate about the fire, and the perception of Twitter users during the fire outbreak. The data collection instrument identified for this study was content analysis due to examining tweets posted regarding the 2013 JKIA Fire. This study addressed inferences surrounding the tweets shared and how Twitter users relayed information, and the researcher identified relevant and influential Twitter users who shared tweets during the 2013 JKIA Fire. In this study, the hashtag #JKIAFire trended due to the high level of engagement. However, the findings demonstrated that engagement does not necessarily equate to social media users posting pertinent information because shared content may be unrelated and not associated with a particular event. Twitter users shared tweets about the 2013 JKIA Fire by contributing to the online conversation. Facts, speculations, influence, and feelings drove the Twitter conversations. Firstly, the facts were attributed to the actual occurrence of the fire. Secondly, the speculations mainly inclined towards questioning the cause and handling of the fire. Thirdly, influence encompassed users trusting information shared by select entities or individuals. Finally, feelings showcased users’ perceptions during the 2013 JKIA Fire.
