dc.description.abstract | The present study was conducted using a Systematic Literature Review and Meta-analysis to examine the efficacy of communication in enhancing sustainable solid waste management (SSWM). The objective was to identify successful communication strategies that may be used for solid waste management practices in the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, to promote sustainability. While there is existing research that explores the importance of communication in shaping attitudes and promoting behavior change, these analyses tend to focus on individual communication strategies. Therefore, this study employed a systematic literature review and meta-analysis methodologies to evaluate the collective impact of communication strategies on the practice of SSWM. Apart from identifying the various communication strategies employed in the context of SSWM, the study evaluated the overall effect of these communication strategies on SSWM and assessed the extent to which effective communication influenced proper SSWM practices. The study focused on only one element of communication strategies: channels of communication to seek a solution to the problem of SSWM. The research examined a total of 27 studies conducted globally, and the overall effect size ranged between 2.19 and 4.2. The study's results suggest that although communication strategies for SSWM are available, they are often used in isolation. Therefore, the study recommends that the integration of strategies is necessary in order to develop a holistic strategy. The study puts together findings from different studies and advices that to reach maximum impact, different applications of communication strategies need to be put together. Additionally, the research findings suggest that a considerable portion of communication studies exhibit deficiencies in terms of their use of quantitative research methods. The study concludes that effective communication would lead to the protection of the environment, reduce the spread of disease and contribute to the attainment of sustainable development goals. | |
