Abstract

In today’s informed world, the relevance and success of any organization strongly depends on its image and reputation as perceived by its internal and external publics. This relevance and success is determined by effective internal communication. The purpose of this study was to to assess the role of internal communication in influencing employee engagement during the implementation of the Kenya Police reforms. Its objectives were to find out how the Kenya Police internal publics were informed about the new reforms, identify the perceptions of the Kenya Police employees towards reform implementation process in the service and examine perceptions of the Kenya Police employees about the role of internal communication in influencing their engagement during the implementation of the police reforms. The study used the mixed methods research design, which employed both the quantitative and qualitative approaches that involved the use of interviews and administration of questionnaires. Stratified purposive sampling method was used to select a sample size of 192 respondents. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 was used in data analysis. The study found that respondents received information about police reforms mostly through verbal or face to face communication, followed by written communication through memos and signals. Similarly, respondents perceived reforms to be important if fully implemented. Internal communication was found to influence employee engagement to a great extent and this in turn affected the implementation of the police reforms. The study concluded that employees in the police service were informed and agreed to the changes just like the usual order of command they were used to. The study recommended that Police Service should invest in appropriate communication tools and channels that allow information to reach every level in a timely and understandable way. Further, the police service should improve its internal communication strategy and include in it in the overall strategic management plan to ensure proper implementation.
