Abstract
Climate change is not only an environmental and economic crisis but also a growing mental health emergency, especially for youth in vulnerable regions like Kenya. As the country grapples with extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts and devastating floods, young people are increasingly facing eco-anxiety, trauma and psychological distress. Yet, mental health services remain underfunded, stigmatized and largely inaccessible, particularly in informal settlements and rural areas. In response, Kenyan youth are turning to digital platforms, such as social media, podcasts, and online forums, as spaces for expression, connection, and advocacy. This study examines how Kenyan youth utilise digital communication strategies to address climate-related mental health challenges, amplify their voices, and foster resilience. It highlights the urgent need to understand and support these emerging digital practices as complementary tools for psychosocial support in the face of climate uncertainty. By examining youthled digital activism and storytelling, the research contributes to broader discussions on climate justice, mental well-being and inclusive communication in the Global South. The objectives of the study are threefold: (1) to assess the extent and nature of climateinduced mental health issues among Kenyan youth, (2) to examine the role of digital communication platforms in supporting youth mental health and climate engagement, and (3) to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of these platforms as psychosocial support mechanisms. The research adopts a qualitative approach, relying primarily on desktop research, content analysis and literature reviews. It analyzes existing academic studies, organizational reports, social media campaigns and youth-generated digital content to gain insight into emerging trends, gaps, and opportunities. By focusing on youth voices in digital spaces, the study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the intersection between climate change, mental health, and communication in Kenya, offering practical recommendations for mental health support, policy response and climate resilience.
