Abstract
During COVID-19 youth have been a challenge in controlling the virus because of their behaviour (Karim et al., 2021); despite the efforts of the Rwandan government in communicating and controlling the virus and protecting its citizens, youth have also been a challenge to the plan (Tabaro, 2021; Rwanda Police, 2021). The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions, knowledge, and involvement or participation of youth towards communication approaches and awareness about COVID-19 health protocols in Rwanda. The Objectives were: (i) To determine communication approaches used to raise awareness about COVID-19 health measures and protocols in the Nyarugenge District, (ii) to measure youth perceptions toward COVID-19 prevention measures and protocols in Nyarugenge District, (iii) to measure the level of youth involvement in COVID-19 measures and protocols that have been communicated. This study was carried out among 203 youth located in the Nyarugenge District of Rwanda. The study used the situational theory of the publics. The research design used in this research was descriptive design and for the sampling method, convenience sampling was used. Findings indicated challenges emanating from poor design of COVID-19 communication and awareness approaches in Rwanda. One of the conclusions of this study is that the youth demonstrated a positive perception, knowledge, and attitude towards COVID-19 and the respective communication approaches for measures and protocols. The study recommended an effective response involving consultative design of protection measures and respective communication and awareness approaches and a consistent awareness and preparedness approaches about COVID-19 and other potential pandemics that may arise in the future are crucial.
