Abstract

ABSTRACT It is the media’s coverage of issues that affect the community that helps the public to become aware of, understand, and help to formulate mitigation efforts. It is common to hear Kenyans say “iko kwa gazeti” (it’s in the paper) to infer that a particular piece of information is the truth. Therefore, this study’s purpose was to examine the coverage of domestic violence issues in Kenya’s leading daily newspaper, The Daily Nation newspaper. The study’s objective was to examine media frames, prominence, placement, and frequency on the coverage of domestic violence stories in The Daily Nation. To this end, the study was structured around the framing theory of the media as well as the social responsibility theory. The study employed a descriptor-explanatory research design, which is a mix of both descriptive and explanatory research designs. Data was collected using an interview schedule as well as content analysis of the newspaper using a code sheet. The collected data analysis was through inferential and statistics. The inferential statistical tools included regression and correlation, while the descriptive statistical tools that were employed included %ages, mean, and frequencies through SPSS. Data was presented in form of tables and charts based on the research objectives. From the research findings, diagnostic frames (62.20%) were the most commonly used in terms of framing of stories, page leads (36.59%) were the highest in terms of prominence, there was a total of 123 articles (33.3%) on domestic violence stories and (82.93%) were placed on the inside of the paper. Findings further indicate that a high number of reporters (66.39%) were male and that the month of February had the highest number of reports (21.95%). The study concluded that the coverage of domestic violence stories is frequent but prominence, placement and framing is not given much consideration. The study
