The purpose of this study was to investigate the participatory approach in the mitigation of alcohol use among the more than 7,000 residents of Kijabe town. The data was collected from the residents by use of both questionnaires and focus group discussions. It was then coded, organised and presented using frequency tables and percentages. Patterns emerging from the data were identified, analysed and reported. The findings established that the residents of Kijabe were actively involved in participatory communication, through various church and community activities as a way of mitigating alcohol use and abuse as well as keeping the community at close watch. This was made possible by the church’s presence in Kijabe, enforcing a strong influence in the behaviour on alcohol use and abuse. Through the various church initiatives - which included programs such as youth groups - the residents of Kijabe enjoyed an alcohol-free environment, which a higher percentage of residents believed was a suitable environment for social and human resource development among other factors. The study recommended involvement of victims of alcohol use and abuse, the leaders and the community members in finding ways through which to mitigate alcohol abuse.
