Abstract

The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of social media on social interaction skills among undergraduate students of Daystar University, Kenya. The objectives of the study were: to establish awareness and use of social media, to establish the behavioral incentives for social media usage, and to establish the influences of social media use on social interaction skills among undergraduate students of Daystar University. The study employed descriptive research design and used a questionnaire as its data collection instrument. The population of the study was 4605 which comprised undergraduate students of Daystar University. Stratified random sampling was used to identify a study sample of 353 students. The collected data was analyzed by use of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Some of the findings of the study were that social media use was evidently popular among the students at Daystar University; that WhatsApp was the most popular social networking site among the undergraduate students of Daystar University; that no differences existed between genders with respect to social media; and that that there was excessive or problematic use of social media among the undergraduate students of Daystar University. A key recommendation based on the study findings was that there is need for counseling and relapse prevention strategies for students with problematic social media behavior, as well as encouragement to students to participate actively in social activities
