Various studies have revealed that there is a positive relationship between the increased flow of information and agricultural development. However, most African countries have not devoted their efforts to the dissemination of knowledge and information, especially in rural areas. This study sought to find out the role of communication in improving agricultural productivity among small scale farmers in Nyamira sub-County. It identified the information sources, channels and technologies used by small scale farmers to access agricultural information. It analyzed the challenges experienced by small scale farmers while accessing and using agricultural information. Finally, it determined ways that can help advance access to and use of agricultural information by small scale farmers to improve agricultural productivity. The research used mixed methods research design and 69,939 farmers formed the population of the study. Using a multi-stage sampling technique, 383 farmers were chosen randomly from seven locations of the sub-County. The researcher also conducted a focus group discussion and a key informant interview. A data analysis software analyzed quantitative data and qualitative data was analyzed by looking for patterns of relationship that exist among data-groups. This was used to augment the quantitative data. Study findings revealed that radio was the most used channel for accessing agricultural information among small farmers. It was also revealed that dissemination of information by the relevant bodies was not adequate and that farmers faced several challenges while accessing and using agricultural information. The study concluded that the objectives of agricultural information can hardly be realized if farmers have no access to information. The study recommended the use of a multiple sources, channels and technologies of dissemination, the use of local radio and local dialect as well as the use of seminars and workshops to promote rapid and efficient access to and use of agricultural information.
