The central purpose of communication in an organization is to keep its members up-to-date. Managers therefore need to encourage an environment of open communication where people share common thoughts, ideas and beliefs, and are encouraged to work towards achieving common goals. The main purpose of this study was to look at the role of collaborative communication in managing the conflict situations that arise within East African Community Secretariat (EACS). Its objectives were to establish relational conflict areas within the EACS, identify the effectiveness of the communication tactics employed while tackling conflicts among internal publics at the EACS and find out what could be done to enable a good conflict management culture for workers at the EACS. The study adopted a descriptive research design with a target population of 210 EACS workers. Systematic random sampling was used to select a sample size of 63 respondents. Questionnaires were used in data collection, which was analysed using analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software. The study revealed that relational conflicts areas within the EAC Secretariat were on differences in educational levels, differences in backgrounds ranging from personal experiences, ethnic heritage, and political preferences. Other relational conflict areas were uncooperative host member states or locals, competing regional political goals, limited funding, conflict of interest among staff, weak bureaucratic systems and work interdependency conflicts. Further, the study found that the tactics employed in handling conflicts were effective as they promoted cohesiveness at the secretariat. The tactics were effective in maintaining a power balance, in facilitating the change process at the secretariat and in problem resolution. The study concluded that acquiring skills related to conflict resolution, self-awareness about conflict resolution, employing good conflict communication skills and establishing a structure for management of conflict would create a good conflict management culture at the EACS. The study recommended that EACS Management should put in place conflict management systems to address the relational conflict areas identified and that EACS should embrace training to develop their employees on conflict management.
