Item Behavioral Factors Predisposing Children Under-Fives to Diarrhea in Developing Countries; A Case of Migori County, Kenya(ASIAN JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, 2021-07-30) Kiarie, Martha; Odero, Collince OmondiBackground: Globally, diarrhoea disease is a major cause of morbidity among children under 5 years (under-fives). In Africa, there are 696 million cases of diarrhoea among under-fives every year. Diarrhoea accounted for about 4.7% of outpatient visits among under-fives in Kenya, a common observation in many developing countries. It appears that even with the well drummed up public health and maternal health programs among the developing countries, diarrheal infections continue to be a major challenge in the lives of children under five years. The object of this study was to examine the behavioral determinants of diarrhoea morbidity among children under 5 years. This was driven by observation of the challenges posed by diarrheal infections in the lives of young children in Migori county in Kenya. Study design involved a descriptive study where a questionnaire was used as the research instrument for data collection. A sample of 216 respondents was studied. Results: According to results, the behavioral factors associated with under five diarrhoea included hand washing with soap (p<0.001; food storage method (p<0.001); and heating stored food before feeding (p<0.001). Hand washing is important because it prevents transmission of infectious agents of diarrhoea after being in contact with excreta such as after changing babies’ nappies. In addition, leftover food can act as a breeding ground for bacteria since the food has been in contact with saliva and skin. There is a need for interventions that promote appropriate practices in food storage method and emphasize heating storage foods. In conclusion, the study emphasizes that hygiene practices should be encouraged, and intervention programmes should be implemented to create awareness on proper refuse and wastewater disposal.Item Disruptive Technology and the Indirect Impact on the Uptake of Covid-19 Vaccination through Self-Exempting Discriminant Attitudes and Misinterpretations in Kenya and the USA(International Journal of Research in Education Humanities and Commerce, 2024-10) Allen, Robert; Odero, Collince OmondiThe study examines the indirect impact of disruptive technology on the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination through self-exempting discriminant attitudes and misinterpretations in Kenya and the USA. COVID-19 vaccine refusal is identified as a major obstacle to achieving health for all, with hesitant individuals spreading misinformation through social media platforms (disruptive technology) thus contributing to low vaccination uptake. The history of disruptive technology, vaccination, and the global COVID-19 pandemic are discussed as context for understanding the current challenges faced in promoting vaccination uptake using disruptive technology. Findings indicated no significant direct effects of disruptive technology on vaccination uptake, with key influencers being attitudes and misinterpretations. Recommendations include focusing on demystifying vaccine effectiveness and tailoring interventions to improve public knowledge and attitudes towards vaccinationItem Environmental Determinants of Diarrhea Morbidity Among Children Under 5 Years in Migori County, Kenya.(2019-12-13) Odero, Collince Omondi; Kiarie, MarthaBackground :Globally, 2.5 billion cases of diarrhoea occur among under-fives every year. Diarrhoea, a major cause of morbidity accounts for over 70% of childhood diseases in Africa. In Kenya, diarrhoea is a major public health problem, listed amongst the leading causes of mortality and morbidity amongst under-fives. Objective: To determine the environmental factors associated with diarrhoea among children under 5 years in Migori County. Methodology: Quantitative approach was used where data collection involved a questionnaire. A total of 216 under- five children were sampled using multistage sampling technique. Analysis of data included generating descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square tests). Results: Findings revealed that the environmental factors including method of refuse disposal (p<0.001); latrine availability (p = 0.001); latrine type (p = 0.037);latrine sharing (p<0.001); source of drinking water (p = 0.009); water storage (p = 0.002); method of drawing water (p = 0.005); scooper cleaning (p<0.001); cleaning water container before refilling (p = 0.034); and drinking water treatment (p = 0.010)had an effect on the occurrence of diarrhea in under-five year old children. Discussions :A number of other environmental characteristics of mothers (or caregivers) of under-fives were found to be associated with diarrhoea in this study. Under five diarrhoea morbidity can be minimized if concerted efforts are made to improve waste disposal, increase latrine availability, reduce latrine sharing, improve drinking water source, treat drinking water, improve water storage and hygiene. Conclusion: The environmental determinants of diarrhoea morbidity identified should be addressed to prevent occurrence of diarrhoea disease among under-fives.Item Health needs assessment of urban areas and the key interventions: A case study of Nairobi City County(Journal of Public Health and Epidemiology, 2024) Odero, Collince Omondi; Kiarie, MarthaUrbanization has led to complex challenges in healthcare in many cities globally. This study involved a health needs assessment of Nairobi City County to elucidate the health dynamics among the diverse Nairobi City population. The health needs assessment encompassed profiling the Nairobi City County population, identifying the prevailing health priorities, and recommending strategic interventions. The findings show high mortality rates caused by preventable diseases, the youthful population, and behavioural risk factors. In essence, priority health risks include violence, respiratory diseases, accidents, tuberculosis, and preterm birth. Strategies recommended should be evidence-based, including social protection, preventive services, rehabilitation of substance abuse, and housing improvements to combat the health needs identified. This health needs assessment research serves as a significant framework for health planning in urban areas, facilitating interventions that are evidence-based, and tailored to the given needs of the urban populationItem Spirituality and Pope John Paul II(2015-02) Odero, Collince OmondiItem Strategies for Adopting Disruptive Technology among Universities During the Covid-19 Pandemic(International Journal of Research in Education Humanities and Commerce, 2021-04-02) Odero, Collince Omondi; Robert, Allen; Uche, GregUniversities faced enormous pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic to assimilate eLearning as a disruptive technology and modify their traditional learning to become more sustainable, competitive, and affordable. Governments globally took measures to control the spread of the highly transmissible COVID-19 by developing policies that led to the shutting of schools and the closing of physical learning in universities. It was therefore imperative to conduct this research to revamp eLearning as a disruptive technology in the university education sector. The study adopted a qualitative approach and data collection involved interviews where participants included the faculty and ICT personnel. Findings showed that the strategy for eLearning sustenance and implementation revolved around training, appropriate changeover mechanisms, and availability of critical resources dedicated to sustaining the disruptive technology. In conclusion, universities should continuously solicit innovations since the advantages of adopting disruptive technology are numerous including greater convenience, less complexity, increased performance, and less cost.Item Understanding Pope John Paul II(2015-02) Odero, Collince OmondiPope JP II was famous globally not only because he had visited many countries to preach the gospel of Christ, but also because of the various speeches and writings that were found to be inspirational. In essence, Karol J. Wojtyla was elected on 16th October 1978 to become the representative of the Catholic Church as a Pope thus becomes Peter’s 264th successor. He adopted the name Pope JP II, who came to be known globally as one of the most influential religious leaders of his time. This is mainly because as a Pope, he worked hard to represent the Catholic Church appropriately and exercised his powers to ensure as many people as possible could be reached with the good news and message about Christ. By the time of the end of his papacy, Pope JP II had written over 15 apostolic exhortations, 14 encyclicals, 45 apostolic letters and 11 apostolic constitutions besides giving innumerable speeches and messages on the issues he considered important to the Church in general and Christianity and the world at large. Among the many innovations that Pope JP II made, he showed profound love for young people and founded WYD which was arguably a true renewal for the Church since the young people were regarded by Pope JP II as the future face of the Church. Consequently, Pope JP II promoted his concern for the development of spirituality and contemplation among the youth and the future Church and this prepared the Church with a great deal for the new challenges that the new millennium presented. Besides, the pontificate of Pope JP II was considered in the Catholic Church history as one the most successful and longest. Pope JP II was acknowledged as successful in various studies because of many reasons, apart from leading a life of inspiration to the faithful. He also recognized the role of the lay people and canonized a number of them while beautification others. In addition, Pope JP II is a renowned, influential thinker due to the contributions that he made to theology and philosophy and particularly to understanding contemplation and spirituality from his Apostolic Exhortations. Moreover, Pope JP II enhanced the understanding of human dignity and applied a number of 2nd Vatican Council teachings and created dialogue on various contemporary issues. This was mainly to make the people of this world to understand the position of the Church regarding the humanity, the Church, God, and promoted the regeneration of the pastoral activity of the Church. It is through these mission activities that Pope JP II taught and wrote on many issues around spirituality as well as contemplation. Indeed the life that Pope JP II led was a true example of what Contemplation constitutes. In addition, the concept of forgiveness and dialogue was evident in the times of Pope JP II given that he fostered dialogue which involved different religions and various governments. He promoted dialogue in order to promote peace and reconciliation. Consequently, Pope JP II was able to take part in ecumenism as well as reinforcing the discipline and communion of the Church. Pope JP II contributed to the new contemporary history through his teachings, convictions and tenacity in fighting for peace and a better world. Consequently, the practices of Pope JP II became an encouragement to many people, both religious and the non-religious. By insisting that Jesus Christ was the centre of human life rather than the earthly possessions, his teaching inspired many people to adopt a spiritual life that is based on the grace of God’s Spirit. Another notable action which encouraged more people to lead Christian life was his over 120 pastoral trips to different continents where he would teach about Contemplation and promote the evangelization. The ability of Pope JP II to communicate effectively to the world also drew more attention to his writings and teachings hence his thoughts have been a true inspiration to many people.
