Item A study on conversion from Islam to Christianity among the Borana women in Nairobi, Kenya with implications for Christian witness(Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, 2008) Murumba, Pauline C.Item Inculcating Spiritual Disciplines Among Post-High School Youth: A Case Study of The Vuma Transitional Program of The Nairobi Chapel Church, Nairobi Kenya(International Journal of Education Humanities and Social Science, 2021) Murumba, Pauline C.The future of any society is vested in the younger generation; and religious heritage is important in enhancing morality in society. In Kenya, culture change has led to a gap whereby the rite of passage in early adolescence only prepares young people for teenage life. After high school, when the Kenyan law recognizes them as adults, there is no institutionalized ROP. This creates a gap because youth are left alone to maneuver young adulthood. Realizing this gap, a few churches have developed curricula whereby they equip the youth with religious instruction that can jump start them into the next phase of life. Using Kolb’s experiential learning theory, this study endeavored to establish the role of church based transitional programs in inculcating Christian spiritual disciplines among post high school youth. A case study was done on the 2018 edition of the VUMA program organized by the Nairobi Chapel Church, Nairobi Kenya. In this phenomenological study, 30 out of 112 youth and all the five counselors and program director participated in interviews. The data was then transcribed into text and subsequently coded using the NVIVO software. The emerging themes provided the basis for discussion of the results. Findings revealed that the program inculcated a culture of Bible Study and Prayer among the youth through daily activities of Quiet Time, Bible study and teachings.Item The Influence of the Kipsigis Concept of Blessings and Curses on the Understanding of Biblical Concept of Shalom: Toward a Renewed Understandin(ShahidiHub International Journal of Theology & Religious Studies-, 2022) Kitur, Catherine; Murumba, Pauline C.This study examines the traditional African concept of blessings and curses among the Kipsigis people to uncover how these beliefs influence the understanding of the biblical concept of Shalom, which depicts peace and wholeness in all spheres of life. Biblical salvation is often wrongly construed as the ending of all forms of pain and suffering. This is compounded by the theology of prosperity that teaches that authentic Christian faith results in material wealth and physical well-being. Thus, many believers in Christ suffer in silence because of the stigma and faulty understanding that a Christian should not experience brokenness. This paper presents the true meaning of Shalom as an integral aspect of salvation. It highlights the power of God through pain and suffering. The study argues that many Christians fear curses because they are ignorant of the scriptures. Christians need to understand their identity in Christ‘s work to overcome the fear of curses and the powers of evil.Item Influence of Transitional Youth Program on Peer Relationships among Post-High School Youth: A Case Study of theTransitional VUMA Program of Nairobi Chapel Church, Nairobi Kenya(The International Journal of Humanities & Social Studies, 2021) Murumba, Pauline C.Post high school youth programs have lately been recognized as key in facilitating transition from school to college or work. They have highly contributed to the holistic growth of participants: spiritual, social, personal and physical. As the education system in Kenya releases over half a million youth into tertiary institutions annually, there is generally a gap year between school and campus that has been utilized by family and institutions to occupy the youth and equip them with skills that can foster college adjustment. It is on this premise that the study sought to find out the influence of transitional programs on the social lives of the youth, especially in connecting with peers within the theoretical framework of the rite of passage schema. Phenomenological research design was done qualitatively among 30 out of 112 participants of the 2018 edition of the Nairobi Chapel VUMA program with the main tool being interviews. Six counselors were also interviewed together with the program director. The data was transcribed and coded using the NVIVO software; thereby producing themes for discussion. Findings showed that the youth experienced social adaptation which led to a sense of community through close interactions. They also acquired social skills including choosing the right friends and resilience through conflict management. These relationships and skills would hopefully enable youth to adjust to life beyond school.Item The Ubuntu Principle And Salvation: A Focus On The Impact Of Adult Role Modelling On The Sanctification Process Of African Youth(International Journal of Innovative Research and Advanced Studies (IJIRAS), 2023-11) Kitur, Catherine C.; Murumba, Pauline C.The primary focus of the paper is to discuss the sanctification process among African youth through the lens of the Ubuntu principle. The study applies the missional hermeneutic approach to link the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” with adult role modelling of their faith journey to young people in and outside the church. The younger generation carries the hope of every society. Urbanization and modernity have bred individualism and therefore led to a breakdown in the African culture of togetherness where young people’s guidance and mentorship were done communally. Each gender was attended to by their seniors; a process that required quantity and quality time. Today’s parents are quite busy eking a living that youth are left to find their way around the often- murky waters of youthfulness. Studies show that many young adults find wrong role models, which end up in wrong behavior and relationships. By the time they consider salvation, they are bruised and in need of healing. The church mandate is to care for all members of the body by providing an alternative community where every person feels they belong. This study examines how the older generation can create an environment for the young people who not only need to hear what is taught, but also watch the teacher practice how to live out that Christian faith in the process of sanctification. Church youth workers will hopefully create ways and means for such conversations and processes in the church. This winning lifestyle is recommended to any devoted Christian everywhere.
