Enterprise Resource Planning System Implementation and Organizational Performance of Private Universities in Kenya: A Case of Daystar University
(Daystar University, School of Business and Economics, 2024-10) Kioko, Maurice K.
Private universities in Kenya face operational challenges due to fragmented systems that hinder their overall performance. This study examined Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation and organizational performance within private universities, focusing on Daystar University. The specific objectives were to identify ERP system constructs that influence organizational performance, measure organizational performance, and assess the effect of ERP system implementation on performance at Daystar University. Grounded in the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), an explanatory research design was employed. A sample of 375 participants was selected using stratified random sampling. Primary data was collected through questionnaires, and pretesting was conducted to ensure the validity and reliability of the instruments, with a Cronbach's alpha score used to confirm internal consistency. Both descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted. Descriptive statistics summarized the data using frequencies, means, and standard deviations, while inferential statistics, specifically Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, examined the relationships between ERP constructs and organizational performance. The study revealed that ERP system implementation had a significant positive effect on organizational performance at Daystar University, enhancing effectiveness and efficiency, decisionmaking, and cost reduction. The key ERP constructs identified were system customization, process integration, user training, and a centralized database. Additionally, the intervening variable, organizational culture, was found to play a crucial role in moderating the effect of ERP implementation on performance. In conclusion, the ERP implementation at Daystar University has improved performance by streamlining processes and optimizing resource utilization. The study recommends continuous system improvements, enhanced user training, and regular system evaluations to sustain performance gains. These findings contribute to the understanding of ERP implementation in higher education and provide valuable insights for future system upgrades and research in similar institutions.
