Advancements and Challenges of Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study of Daystar University
(IGI Global Scientific Publishing, 2025) Eboi, Anne Anjao; Kowuor, Rosemary Nyaole; Aswani, Daniel Robert; Radoli, Lydia Ouma
The global higher education landscape is fast evolving, demanding that universities equip students with critical knowledge and 21st-century skills. Daystar University (DU) 's switch from teacher-centered models to Problem-Based Learning (PBL) reflects this shift. PBL stresses critical thinking and real-world problem-solving, essential for today's interconnected world. The chapter examined the challenges and advancements of PBL implementation at DU using qualitative methods involving interviews with 30 selected informants and document analysis. Findings show that while PBL has been integrated across various programs, challenges like resistance to change, insufficient faculty training, and resource limitations persist. However, significant progress has been made, including adopting technology-enhanced tools, increased faculty collaboration, and a growing culture of innovation among students. The study recommends targeted faculty development, improved infrastructure, and stronger support systems to enhance PBL's effectiveness in fostering more profound learning experiences.

African Universities' Performances in Selected Global Ranking Models for the Period 2016-2021: Issues and Suggested Solutions
(IGI Global Scientific Publishing, 2023) Eboi, Anne Anjao; Amunga, Hellen
Global university ranking is taking place on the background of continental disparities in higher education. A thematic literature review reveals differences in history, political environments, education, and related policies. This chapter documents the position of African universities in global ranking based on the results of three major ranking systems from 2016-2021. It compares performances in North and South universities; examines the factors responsible for poor performance in global South universities; and provides possible solutions for improved performance. The chapter proposes categorizing universities according to regions for fairness; self-evaluation and benchmarking by African universities with globally best-ranked universities; de-linking of African public universities from political sycophancy; more stakeholder appreciation and investment in universities; and more government funding. These can help improve Africa's education, especially staff capacity; infrastructure; curriculum development and implementation; teaching methodologies; research; and community development.

Communication and the Changing Face of Terrorism in Kenya
(International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2015-06) Eboi, Anne Anjao
Over 50 well-coordinated and largely successful terrorist attacks by Al-Shabaab militants on Kenyan soil since late 2011 have inspired this study. This empirical study is premised on the realization that there is more to stemming terrorist attacks than military reaction. The paper examines the government’s communication mechanisms and how it handles communication on terrorism. The paper also examines the citizen’s preparedness in the event of an attack and what role the government should play with regard to the citizens’ information needs on terrorism. The descriptive survey methodology employed unravels the mystery of a people with dangerously very little knowledge and awareness levels about preventing and foiling terrorist attacks, making them likely victims on a large scale. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of data suggests a government that has not invested in communication strategies that could be harnessed to deter Al-Shabaab militants from carrying out their evil intentions

New Media Strategies' Model For Communicating Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Among Young People in Informal Settlements.
(Jilin Daxue Xuebao (Gongxueban)/Journal of Jilin University (Engineering and Technology Edition), 2022) Eboi, Anne Anjao; Ismail, Awan; Hamid, Norsiah Abdul
Recent trends in health communication globally have seen the rise in use of new media. This study explored the possibility and acceptability of media managers using new media strategies to communicate sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to the youth in informal settlements. Unwanted youth pregnancies in Kenya, especially among the poor and uneducated, remains an obstacle towards achieving Vision 2030. The specific objectives included: to identify new media strategies that can be used to reach the youth in Kenya’s informal settlements; to examine the planning process and use of policy in the management of new media strategies for SRHR campaigns; to understand the media managers’ mitigation of potential challenges in using a new media strategies’ model for SRHR campaigns among the youth in information settlements; and to develop a new media strategies’ model for use in SRHR campaign activities among the youth in informal settlements. This basic research rested on the social constructivism worldview with the qualitative approach to tell a deeper story. Information was collected from Kenya’s biggest informal settlement, Kibera, and other locations through in-depth interviews of the sampled stakeholders. There were also five focus group discussions (FGDs) spread among the youth, parents, and educators. Sampling techniques included purposive sampling and snowballing. Data analysis was done according to Atlas.ti 2012, and thereafter, a thematic analysis was used to yield themes which are presented and discussed in this text. Five main new media strategies identified included: key messaging; combination strategy; new-media geographic-based strategy; school based solutions; and sustained promotional strategy. The study also yielded the 5Ps of planning: Preliminaries; Prepare; Practice; Present; and Policy. Identified challenges included opposition, message-related, limited finances and resources, and technology-related. Mitigation measures include stakeholder inclusion, adequate planning, training, and lobbying for resources. Finally, this study developed a new media strategies’ model from stakeholder perspectives for use by communicators. The study concludes that it is both possible and acceptable to use new media strategies in SRHR campaigns in Kenya.

Planning a New Media Strategies’ Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Campaign Using The 5Ps of Presentation among the Youth in Kenya’s Informal Settlements
(International Journal of Special Education, 2022) Eboi, Anne Anjao; Ismail, Awan; Hamid, Norsiah Abdul
The issue of unwanted pregnancies among young people has escalated in recent times, necessitating the dissemination of life-transforming sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) messages to young people. Previously, SRHR campaigns used conventional media to relay these messages to prevent unwanted pregnancies. However, evidence suggests that the target audience is increasingly consuming new media as society is now more connected than before. For effective implementation of new media strategies for the prevention of pregnancies among young people, good planning is essential. There is need to adopt a new mindset and strategies when planning a campaign to run online since online campaigns are considered more challenging. Therefore, the present study explores the campaign planning process and use of SRHR policy in managing SRHR campaigns using new media strategies. Qualitative in-depth interviews and a thematic analysis were used. Findings indicate that effective planning must consider the relevant policies and involve all concerned stakeholders. Therefore, guided by the 4Ps of good presentations, we developed a modest model of the 5Ps of Planning an SRHR campaign. These are Preliminaries, Preparation, Practice, Presentation, and Policy. The paper concludes that the effective planning of an SRHR online campaign should consider the 5Ps of planning.

X Space and the Revolution of Digital News Content: The Case of Generation-Z Protest Narratives in Kenya
(African Multidisciplinary Journal of Research (AMJR), 2025) Ogutu, Raphael Nakhumbi; Eboi, Anne Anjao; Aswani, Daniel Robert; Radoli, Lydia Ouma
The power of digital media in Kenya has been demonstrated in the active social engagement and production of news discourse during the recent Generation-Z (Gen-Z) political activism on X Space. The discourse confirms a growing mass participation in news discourse on digital media taking precedence over legacy media. In the age of disruptive technologies, and the production of social-political discourses, an active, critical and content-producing mass is quickly surpassing traditionally assumed passive audience. In Kenya, amid a digital media frenzy over the Gen-Z protests, citizen journalism overrides legacy journalism, and in some cases, raw footage captured at points of witness is uploaded online without as much censorship. The paper applied qualitative in-depth interviews of eight journalists to assess the Gen-Z political activism and production of discourses on X Space. Theories of disruptive technologies were juxtaposed against the agendasetting theory to identify the positive effects of digital narratives, including facilitating activism, active youth engagement in news discourse and social change. The study found out that a new form of youth activism has emerged, with the youth fruitfully engaging in X Space discourses, which culminate in actual street protests; Digital storytelling represents a powerful fusion of technology and social consciousness, where the young people project their voices of concern; Citizen journalism has fundamentally altered the dynamics of traditional journalism, reshaping the way news is gathered, reported, and consumed; and that during the protests, mainstream media played catch-up as it struggled to keep up with the many discourses emerging from X Spaces. The study recommends that traditional media aim to fully align with the opportunities presented in disruptive innovative developments; and that the Kenyan media grab the opportunity to reevaluate their approach to gathering and disseminating news in the modern age for sustainable business and to maintain their important agenda-setting and gatekeeping roles
