    Prevalence and Predictors of Anxiety Disorders Among Adolescents in Selected Mixed Public Secondary Schools in Nairobi County, Kenya.

    This study sought to determine the prevalence and predictors of Anxiety Disorders (ADs) among adolescents in selected mixed public secondary schools, in Nairobi, Kenya. The specific objectives were: to find out the subtypes of ADs among adolescents, identify gender differences in ADs among adolescents, establish the predictors of ADs among adolescents, and establish coping mechanisms of alleviating ADs among adolescents. The study adopted a descriptive research design with a targeted population of 1995. The study population comprised adolescents aged between 14-18 years studying in selected mixed public secondary schools in Dagoretti South sub-county in Nairobi County, Kenya. Simple random sampling method was used to select a sample size of 241 respondents. Data was collected using two types of questionnaires: the socio-demographic questionnaire and Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 was used to analyze quantitative data while thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Both descriptive (frequencies and percentages) and inferential (correlation) analyses were conducted and findings were presented in form of statistical tables. Overall, the prevalence of ADs among adolescents was (80.4%), where females had statistical significant higher means in ADs (p=0.000). The study recommends the need for gender-specific programs that can help psycho-educate girls on pubertal developments, which may ease their anxieties. Age appropriate CBT program like REBT and CT programs need to be offered as early as possible since the disorder seems to have an early age of onset for this sample.
