Higher Education eLearning Technologies International Conference Team Presentation 2 Mr. Anthony Wambua Wambua Deputy Director, Directorate of Quality Assurance & Lecturer, Department of Computer Science Dr. Sylvia Tuikong Director, Directorate of Quality Assurance & Senior Lecturer, Department of Peace and International Studies Insert Team members if having team presentation The role of emerging disruptive education technologies in optimizing learning outcomes An Examination of Perceptions of Faculty and Students on the Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Enhancing or Hindering the Educational Experience in eLearning Introduction The study investigated the perspectives of students and faculty concerning the influence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the learning process. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio among others. In a time of rapid technological development, it is essential to comprehend how important stakeholders perceive generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to best integrate technology into education in the era of eLearning.   4 Methodology The study used a descriptive design Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to get the study participants. The study targeted at least 100 students and 50 faculty members.  However, a total of 176 students and 71 faculty members participated in the study. The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS (version 25) and thereafter presented through descriptive and inferential statistics. Qualitative data was analyzed through emerging themes. 5 Results : Students Usage of GenAI Tools 6 How Students use Gen AI for learning 7 Students concern about ethical issues in the use of AI 8 Students: GenAI offers personalized learning 9 Dependence on Generative AI versus creativity Selected students responses during the interviews:- “I am concerned that excessive reliance on generative AI may hinder my ability to think” “Overdependence on generative AI tools might negatively impact my problem solving skills” 10 Lecturers’ Proficiency with GenAI 11 How Lecturers use Gen AI for learning 12 Lectures concerned about ethical arising due to GenAI use 13 Lecturers trained on use of GenAI? 14 Discussion Students active use of GenAI calls for institutional involvement – training, highlight ethical usage. Faculty members should not be seen as the deterrents to use of GenAI in learning but should guide. The level of faculty proficiency with technology determines encouragement or lack of it on AI use for their students. HEIs should train lecturers on use GenAI beyond personal reading & research, proper use GenAI can enhance teaching and learning. 15 Discussion cont.. GenAI’s to offer personalized learning can be explore esp. for eLearning Both lecturers and students have ethical concerns which when addressed can lead to beneficial use of GenAI Lecturers should inculcate creativity and problem solving skills in students through GenAI use, by using customized learning materials e.g. quizzes, exercises, scenarios that challenge students to think critically and creatively solve problems and through the use of interactive simulations. 16 Conclusion The findings of this research shed light on the diverse perceptions of students and faculty regarding the role of generative AI in enhancing or hindering teaching and learning. While a number of students expressed enthusiasm about the potential of AI to revolutionize education through personalized learning experiences, simulations, collaborative learning and access to reading and research materials, others raised ethical concerns on the potential for overreliance on generative AI in education. 17 The study highlights the importance of carefully considering the implications of integrating generative AI into educational practices. While AI has the potential to offer valuable tools and resources for enhancing teaching and learning, it is essential to approach its implementation thoughtfully, taking into account the perspectives and concerns of all stakeholders. 18 image5.jpg image3.png image4.png image6.png image2.png image7.png image8.jpg image10.png image11.png image12.png image13.png image14.png image15.png image16.png image17.png image18.png image1.jpg
