| dc.description.abstract | Adolescence is a crucial developmental stage characterized by increased stress levels, which can impact mental health and well-being. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of stress among high school students and examine the influence of socio-demographic factors on stress and coping strategies. The research was conducted in PCEA Kikuyu and Musa Gitau secondary schools, with data showing that 97.8% of students experienced moderate to high stress, including 75.8% at moderate levels and 22% at high levels. Family background significantly influenced stress, with students living with both parents predominantly experiencing moderate stress (81%), while those living with only their mother reported higher stress (33% high). Stress was positively correlated with age, indicating older students experienced more stress. Additionally, students with deceased parents had elevated stress levels. Gender differences were evident, as girls reported more family-related stress compared to boys. In terms of coping strategies, 100% of boys exhibited moderate coping levels, while girls demonstrated a broader range of coping skills, with 62% moderate and 33% high. Girls showed significantly stronger coping strategies, as indicated by a positive correlation between sex and coping skills. The main stressors identified were schoolwork (43%), family stress (20%), and relationship issues (10%). These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to address stress and support the development of effective coping strategies among adolescents. | |
