Abstract

The complex landscape of modern businesses therefore, emphasizes the critical importance of leadership for business success. This study sought to investigate the effect of leadership styles on competitive advantage of selected recruitment firms in Nairobi County. The study aimed at identifying the leadership styles applied in selected recruitment firms in Nairobi County, the effect of identified leadership styles on competitive advantage of the selected recruitment firms and the challenges associated with application of particular leadership styles. The study used descriptive research design. Quantitative data was analyzed by use of both descriptive and inferential statistics by use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 22). The target population was all employees working at the selected recruitment firms, Altima Africa, Rose Avenue Consulting Group, and Human Capital Synergies Africa whose total was 44 employees. A census approach was used for 44 respondents. Structured and semistructured questionnaires were the major research tool in the study. A majority of the respondents indicated that they used transformational leadership (31.4%), transactional leadership (22.9%), laissez-faire leadership (37.1%), servant leadership (34.3%) and charismatic leadership (37.1%). The findings also revealed that the majority (34.3%) agreed that services offered were of good quality and were considered to be very important to the organisation. The results indicated that leadership skills were effective on product innovation as shown by the mean response of 4. The study recommended that recruitment firms in Nairobi City County can adopt transformational and transactional leadership style but strategize to transit to transformational leadership style as their enterprise develop, grow and mature.
