Abstract

There has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for higher education all over the world, with education becoming one of the greatest basic needs for many. This demand is in both public and private universities (Christian universities fall in the category of private universities). A study conducted worldwide on Christian higher education indicated that new Christian universities are rising across the globe and over 178 such universities have come into being in the last 30 years, 46 of which are in the African continent (Carpenter, 2012). More specifically, out of the universities founded since 1990, there are 138 new Christian universities outside North America, 19 in former communist nations, 13 in India, 25 in Asia and Australia, and dozens in Korea with very high enrolment of students. However, this growth in numbers of students seeking university education does not match the universities available across the globe. The demand for higher education is a clear indication of the importance of education worldwide, and especially in Africa, where it epitomizes something that parents are bequeathing their children, replacing the traditional forms of inheritance such as land and animals.
