Abstract

Elections are fundamental pillars of democracy that legitimize governments and determine political leadership. However, in Kenya, youth participation in electoral processes has remained inconsistent despite citizens aged 18–34 constituting a significant proportion of the electorate. Persistent socio-economic vulnerability, institutional mistrust, and political disillusionment continue to constrain their engagement. This study focused on Lang’ata Constituency and sought to examine the factors and trends shaping youth participation across the 2013, 2017, and 2022 general elections. The study was guided by three objectives: to analyze the factors influencing youth voter registration and turnout; to examine patterns of participation across three electoral cycles; and to assess the role of civil society and voter education initiatives in shaping youth engagement. The research was anchored in the Rational Choice Theory, which interprets participation as a cost–benefit decision influenced by socio-economic conditions, and the Participatory Democracy Theory, which underscores inclusive and active citizen involvement as a foundation for democratic consolidation. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study targeted youth aged 18–34 residing in Lang’ata Constituency, Nairobi County. Quantitative data was collected through a structured survey administered to 84 respondents, while qualitative data was obtained through key informant interviews (KIIs) involving officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), civil society representatives, political party youth leaders, and independent aspirants. Data was gathered using structured questionnaires and interview guides. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative data, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and insights. The findings revealed that youth participation in Lang’ata Constituency was significantly influenced by socio-economic factors, perceptions of institutional credibility, and the reach and quality of civic education initiatives. While participation levels fluctuated across the three electoral cycles, the overall trend indicated a gradual improvement in youth engagement, particularly where targeted civic awareness and mobilization efforts were sustained. The study concludes that enhancing youth participation requires addressing socio-economic barriers, strengthening electoral integrity, and deepening civic education to foster greater trust and ownership in democratic processes.
