Abstract
This study delved into the complex dynamics surrounding the preservation of cultural identity among urban refugees in Kenya by specifically focusing on communication practices, a key strategy in corporate communication, emphasizing that direct and personal interactions help build relationships, facilitate feedback, and ensure cultural sensitivity. By applying these principles, the study sought to show how effective communication is key for creating deeper understanding of cultural nuances and foster empathy and trust which is important for meaningful and supportive exchanges. The study’s objectives were: To find out how communication practices between the refugees as stakeholders and host community as the organization influence the preservation of refugees’ cultural identity, to understand how the beliefs and attitudes of the host community influence their interactions with refugees in the preservation of refugees’ cultural identity, also to examine the challenges experienced by refugees in preserving their cultural identity and to explore the effectiveness of the current communication practices employed by the host community and refugees in facilitating cultural preservation and integration. This study was guided by the Social Identity theory and adopted a case study research design. A sample size of 12 was used and selected using purposive sampling for this qualitative study. The study highlighted how important communication is to refugees in Kitengela in maintaining their cultural identity. However, challenges including language barriers, cultural misinterpretations, and unfavorable opinions from the host community impede this process. The study suggests developing community centers for refugees, implementing cultural exchange programs, and improving communication techniques to promote better integration and understanding between the host community and refugees in order to address these problems.
