Effect of Staff Development on The Performance of Nurses in Public Hospitals in Bunia City, Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract

The study purposed to investigate the effect of staff development on the performance of nurses in the public hospitals in Bunia City, DRC. The objectives of the study were; to assess staff development on the performance of nurses, to find out the performance of nurses and to establish the effect of staff development on the performance of nurses. The study used descriptive survey research design. The target population was 723 nurses with a sample size of 72. The study used questionnaire and interview guide to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson product moment correlation. Regarding staff development, the study found that, the facilities did not always carry out team development programs for all personnel whenever required and there was also lack of regular mentoring and workshop programs for all personnel. Concerning performance of nurses, the research found out that, nurses at the facilities had shown improved knowledge due to development programs received. On the effect of staff development of nurses on their performance, the study established that, the facilities did not regularly allocate certain funds for development of personnel to improve their performance and they did also not bring on board experts on HR development to improve skills and knowledge of workers. It concludes that staff development programs had positive relationship nurses' performance. The study recommends that, all public health hospitals in Bunia city should ensure that frequent development programs for all nurses is considered to ensure improved skills and knowledge is ascertained.
