Assessment of Psycho-Social Effects of Non-Adherence to Antiretro Viral (Arv) Treatment on The Wellbeing of HIV/AIDS Teenage Patients Seeking Medication in Taso Mulago, Kampala District, Uganda

Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the effects of non-adherence to ARV treatment on wellbeing of teenagers seeking health care services in TASO Mulago. It was guided by Health Belief Model revised by Taylor 2017 which explained why people would or not use available services to prevent anticipated future complications arising as a result of neglected services prior complications and Social Cognitive Theory. The specific objectives: Assessed the health effects of non-adherence to ARV treatment among teenagers; found out the economic effects of non-adherence to ARV treatment among teenagers; investigated the psycho-social effects of non-adherence to ARV treatment among teenagers; determined the relationship between effects of non-adherence to ARV treatment and wellbeing of teenagers in TASO Mulago, Kampala District, Uganda. Quantitative and Qualitative data collection approach was used in the study. Data was randomly gathered by use of questionnaire from 148 respondents, Morisky Medication adherence scale which was a standardised tool was administered. Pre-test was done to ensure that the standardised tool was ready for data collection. Validity and reliability were established during pretesting. Ethical clearance was sought from Daystar University Ethics Review Board and also Research Ethics Review Committee- Mulago. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27. The study established findings and recommendation that informed policy and practice which aimed at improving the services and interventions tailored for the wellbeing of HIV/AIDs positive teenagers and also contributed to the body of knowledge.
