Assessing the Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Military

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing area. It has been employed in many fields. It has been utilized in education, agriculture, medicine, engineering among other sectors. It has also been used in the military, in ways that have revolutionized combat. This brings about opportunities and challenges especially in the legal realm. The legal issues touch on various substantive areas of the law such as human rights, property law, torts law, international law and criminal law. This paper ventures into the use of artificial intelligence in the military. It looks at the ways in which AI has been used in the military. It then looks into legal issues presented by the use of AI in the military. It starts with intellectual property rights, responsible use and finally legal issues arising from the use of AI in the military.
