    Effects of Interoperability of Health Management Information Systems on Healthcare Insurance Accountability: A Case of Mtiba

    This study on Effects of Interoperability of Health Management Information Systems on Healthcare Insurance Accountability: A Case of MTIBA, presents a comprehensive investigation into the effects of Interoperability between healthcare systems and MTIBA on enhanced accountability in the Kenyan healthcare insurance sector. The study adopted a mixed methods approach to address specific research objectives, including assessing the current level of Interoperability, evaluating the role of individual systems integration, measuring user satisfaction, and exploring the contributions of Interoperability to improved accountability. A total of 94 respondents were sampled for the study. The principal researcher conducted two focus group discussions, one with four participants and another with nine participants. Key findings revealed a structural level of Interoperability, supported by consistent and well-defined methods for sharing information transparently (mean 4.43, SD = 0.88). Integration efforts were found to enhance collaboration and communication among healthcare stakeholders, improve the efficiency of data exchange and processing, and contribute to greater accountability and transparency. Users expressed overall satisfaction with systems interoperable with MTIBA (mean 3.87, SD = 0.92), highlighting operational efficiency, reliable data provision, and transparency as key factors contributing to their satisfaction. Furthermore, Interoperability was shown to lead to improved accountability in the healthcare insurance sector, particularly in payer and provider accountability, claims processing efficiency, data accuracy, and fraud prevention. This research adds valuable insights to the field by highlighting the benefits of Interoperability in healthcare systems, contributing to the body of knowledge regarding healthcare accountability, and emphasizing the positive outcomes of Interoperability. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of continued efforts to promote and enhance Interoperability in healthcare information systems, ultimately leading to improved accountability and service quality.
